Yes it is March 26th, I deserve a slap on the wrist for not blogging in awhile. However, haha I have been quite indecently obsessed with pinterest.
my pinterest account
I believe the above link will show you what i have been obsessed with lately.
So I'd like to do this post on something I have been thinking about the past few days. My roommate brought up to me that pinterest has really helped give her a definition of what her style is, and she can take inspiration from posts to create and mold it.
What exactly is style?
Google definitions tell me it means the following:
-Elegance and sophistication
- A distinctive appearance
-A way of behaving or approaching a situation that is characteristic of or favored by a particular person
Searching around, I realize there is NO true definition of style, in relation to fashion. This is highly appropriate considering there is no definition, and that is the beauty of style.
In my opinion, Style is created by a few things;
1. Some people are born with a natural style and/or swagger
2. Opinion
3. Taste
I'm not exactly pleased with the one definition given from Google stating its "elegance and sophistication". my personal style is rarely completely elegant. and I love that about myself.
I chose opinion and taste because if it is your opinion that wearing certain pieces of clothing fit well, then wear them. If wearing a classic, preppy vibe is your thing, go for it. Different vibes look good on different people. Taste is simple. I have hair with
big pieces of blonde, and pink
dip dye. This is along with a nose ring and tons of jewelry. Some individuals may think I'm tacky or maybe, I don't know punky or something haha. I like looking laid back and this is how I express myself.
It wasn't always easy to get to where I am now, comfortable in my personal style. Middle school is when I began to play around with fads, and what I thought was, "in" or "cool". However these were always defined by everyone else, and not by myself. I feel everyone makes this mistake, as some continually do to this day. And this is what bothers me so much. High school I over- compensated with tons of statement jewelry and color-overload. I was trying to compensate for my own style and went a bit too far in the other direction in some cases haha. My senior year of high school and these years in college have helped me find a nice medium between my own style without being downright gaudy, and following
trends (not copying for the sake of looking "in" following trends is about taking ideas from the runways and fashion icons and whatever else and making them your own) in fashion without taking them too far.
Style is YOUR OWN personal choice of expressing yourself in your appearance. What makes you special and unique if you are dressing like everyone else? Sure, I could go run out to the nearest shoe store and buy some Ugg's and throw em on with leggings and a north face jacket just like every other girl on my college campus. Yet just because something seems popular does not NECESSARILY mean it actually looks good.
I'm not trying to criticize anyone here. Maybe that IS your personal style choice. I am just saying, don't buy these things, and wear them to feel as if you need to fit in, or as if that is "style". Because trust me, you will look so much more put-together if you throw some nice jeans, a tee and blazer on. 1 billion points to you :)
